CONCERT OF UNIVERSE
paper, colored pencils
Let me introduce one of the most remarkable works in my colorful collection.
Depending on the degree and quality of the viewer's religiosity, it could be called "mystical", "prophetic" or even "divine", or simply strange or at least very unusual.
The author's idea at the start was as follows: to depict a musical trio consisting of the main characters of the ancient Indian epic, directly related to art, in the form of a distant star nebula.
The central figure in the composition is Lord Shiva - the cosmic principle of existence, whose authorized representative in each of us is the heart. As long as the heart beats, life goes on. As long as the drum - damru - sounds in Shiva's hands, the heart of the Universe works - it exists.
The figure on the left side of the composition is Goddess Saraswati - the cosmic principle of creation, which, according to the ideas of Vedic philosophy, manifests itself in man as creativity.
In iconographic traditions, Sri Saraswati is always depicted playing a special stringed instrument called "veena".
Lord Krishna is the universal principle of evolution, permanently changing everything and everyone according to the inviolable laws he himself established. His favorite instrument is the flute, symbolizing creation as endless music, the meaning of which is the sound in the current moment, as well as the joy of living this moment and its unique sound.
When the work was as close to completion as possible, it suddenly turned out that in addition to the main characters, another one appeared on the sheet, according to the plot of the ancient Indian epic, directly related to the main one, but which I did not remember either before, during or after drawing!
Look closely and I hope you will notice without much difficulty that next to the figure of Krishna you can clearly see the head of a cow, a frequent companion of his youthful wanderings - that very "sacred animal" of which Mahatma Gandhi said that the cow is a symbol of the defenselessness of the natural world, calling for human compassion...
When I asked my mother, a regular viewer, connoisseur and appraiser of my creative efforts, who had become well acquainted with the main characters during the month of work, to say who, besides her acquaintances, she sees in the drawing, my mother answered almost immediately: an elephant!
What elephant?!
Can such a completely obvious cow be confused with an elephant?
My mother points to a fragment of the drawing, to the right of Shiva and - oh, gods! I really see the head of an elephant!
The trunk, the ears, the eyes - everything is in place!
Lord Shiva's son Ganesha hurried to participate in this amateur shadow theater, appearing without asking where he should - on the left side of his Creator!
Realizing that I was dealing with an extraordinary situation, I began to meditate on the image and soon successfully discerned another "secondary" character, in the context of centuries-old traditions directly connected with the main one, but consciously not taken into account by me in any way in the composition!
In the view of ancient and many modern Indians, the goddess Saraswati is constantly accompanied by a dazzling white swan - a symbol of purity and impeccable ability to distinguish the true from the untrue. If you also "meditate" on her image, that is, carefully, but without straining, look at the drawing, then most likely you will find that Saraswati seems to be sitting on a star cluster, the shape of which is very reminiscent of a swan!
In short, with a little help from my friends, during the few days of the presentation of the "Concert for the Universe" with a fairly large number of witnesses, several more "aliens" from the collective unconscious were discovered with undisguised surprise - Hanuman, Shesha, a cobra on the neck of Lord Shiva as a symbol of the sacred energy of Kundalini and even evangelical reminiscences.
However, there was absolutely no information about one of the "guests" in my personal representation of the unconscious: in the drawing it was discovered that Lord Shiva, at his own secret discretion, saddled his canonical vahana (mystical means of transportation) - the mighty bull Nandi, to get acquainted with whom I had to visit Wikipedia!
And there was a reason to visit, since it turned out that the bull Nandi is nothing other than the personification of the laws of dharma (commandments), the observance of which the all-pervading Shiva jealously watches over every moment, therefore he is constantly riding on his vahana.
Being sure that I was drawing a drum - dolok - in the hands of Shiva, according to the secret plan of Providence, I depicted the horns of Nandi!
So, let's summarize everything obvious and incredible:
in the picture we have three main characters of the numerous pantheon of Indian deities, drawn by me in a clear mind and firm memory, plus at least eight characters who appeared nearby completely unconsciously, but more than in essence.
The questions simply beg to be asked: what does all this mean?
"Sophisticated jokes" of the pattern recognition system, built into our brain and tuned to specific options in specific people? Or is it some kind of transcendental experience, impressively revealed in the most accessible and understandable way - through the art?
In a certain sense, both.
And the predominance, as always, depends on the choice of the observer. But, no matter what choice you make, one fact will be hard to deny: both the picture itself and its story turned out to be quite entertaining, don't they?
