Medusa eventually meets her end at the hands of the hero Perseus, who beheads her using a mirrored shield to avoid her petrifying gaze. Even in death, Medusa's head retained its power and was used by Perseus to defeat his enemies, reinforcing her dual role as both monster and protector.

In Rus', the protective image of a maiden with snake hair or legs was depicted on stone or metal medallions called serpentines. The image depicted on ancient medallions was very similar to the description of the Gorgon Medusa, a colorful character from ancient Greek myth whose name means "protector." The reverse side of such medallions was decorated with an image of a Christian saint and words from a Greek prayer.
This symbol was popular in society, protected the owner from diseases, the evil eye, epidemics, misfortunes and death, gave the owner longevity, health and energy. Often, serpentine was kept in the house and protected it, attracting luck and prosperity.
