This original artwork "Medusa Gorgon" was created by the contemporary Russian artist Dmitry Konochkin and is available for sale online.
One of the most iconic figures in Greek mythology, Medusa is often recognized by her terrifying appearance: a woman with snakes for hair and a gaze that can turn people to stone.
However, beneath this surface lies a complex history, saturated with themes of transformation, power, sacrifice, and resilience.
Medusa's origins vary depending on the source, but the most famous myth comes from the poet Ovid in his Metamorphoses. Medusa was once a beautiful maiden, a priestess of Athena who had taken a vow of chastity.
According to the myth, Medusa was raped by Poseidon in Athena's temple. Enraged by this desecration, Athena punished not Poseidon, but Medusa, by turning her into a monstrous Gorgon: her hair became snakes, and anyone who looked at her face turned to stone.
Medusa eventually meets her end at the hands of the hero Perseus, who beheads her using a mirrored shield to avoid her petrifying gaze. Even in death, Medusa's head retained its power and was used by Perseus to defeat his enemies, reinforcing her dual role as both monster and protector.
Medusa the Gorgon was often used as a symbol of protection, appearing on Greek shields.
In Rus', the protective image of a maiden with snake hair or legs was depicted on stone or metal medallions called serpentines. The image depicted on ancient medallions was very similar to the description of the Gorgon Medusa, a colorful character from ancient Greek myth whose name means "protector." The reverse side of such medallions was decorated with an image of a Christian saint and words from a Greek prayer.
This symbol was popular in society, protected the owner from diseases, the evil eye, epidemics, misfortunes and death, gave the owner longevity, health and energy. Often, serpentine was kept in the house and protected it, attracting luck and prosperity.
From ancient Greece to modern feminist movements, the legacy of Medusa has evolved from a frightening monster to a powerful symbol of resilience and transformation.
