Vyacheslav Gayun's painting “Portrait” is an unexpected and minimalist piece that challenges the traditional understanding of the genre. Instead of depicting a human face, the artist creates a monumental “portrait” of the most ordinary objects – a spoon and a fork.
The entire composition is enveloped in a rich, tactile texture of golden-yellow color. This background is not uniform; it vibrates with many shades of ochre, mustard, and golden ochre, creating the impression of old, richly decorated metal or an ancient scroll.
In the center of this golden field is a dark, almost black vertical rectangle. Inside it, strictly aligned, are two objects: on the left – a spoon, on the right – a fork. They are depicted in a stylized, simplified form, reminiscent of ancient idols or engravings. Their surface is also worked with textured strokes of golden paint, giving them an archaic, almost sacred appearance.
Gayun uses these utilitarian objects as symbols. Placing them in the center, framing and highlighting them with gold, he elevates them from everyday items to the level of signs, possibly speaking about the importance of simple rituals – the act of eating, communicating at the table, or even the “filling” of life.
In the lower left corner, you can notice the artist's characteristic signature integrated into the texture of the golden background.
Gayun's “Portrait” is a deeply meditative exploration of form and texture. Using a limited palette (gold, black, and their variations), the artist achieves maximum effect: ordinary cutlery transforms into icons of everyday life, captured in eternal, shimmering gold.
