Sergey Merenkov’s painting “Mazaev Ark” is not just a reinterpretation of the famous Nekrasov poem about Grandfather Mazay and the hares, but a multi-layered ironic parable about kindness, compassion, responsibility, and, of course, the absurdity of trying to save the world alone. The artist creates a grotesque and memorable image that simultaneously evokes a smile and makes us think about important issues. The canvas depicts Grandfather Mazay sailing through a flooded forest on a raft made of logs and… hares. His face expresses concentration, determination, and perhaps some fatigue. He seems to be used to his role as a rescuer and performs it with imperturbable calm, despite the absurdity of the situation.
