The idea for creating these works came quite simply and organically — in the summer, I was vacationing with my family by the sea and rereading the Strugatsky brothers' novel Snail on the Slope. The aesthetics of nature combined with the text formed a single image.
I wanted to create a large panorama with water lilies and water, and as I considered what the theme of this canvas should be, I realized that the horizontal axis represents quantitative development. This is how the diptych Pond with Water Lilies came about. The figures here help create the necessary dynamics — a connection, some kind of dialogue, is built between them.
One idea in the novel caught my attention, which runs as a leitmotif throughout the narrative — one character desperately wants to get into the forest but cannot, while another character is in the forest and cannot get out. These stories are united by the forest, which, in essence, is the third main character of the novel. It is a full-fledged character that lives by its own laws and is in continuous development.
When I was already reflecting on the canvases, the first thing that appeared in them was the image of nature, quite realistic, with many details. Its color scheme arose from what I had observed — from long and attentive walks in parks and botanical gardens.
The titles of these works are quite simple, short, one might say general, because I did not want to impose any of my own associations or emotions on the viewer. I wanted the viewers to have their own space for thought.
Although images of people appear in my works, they are essentially staffage. Nature still plays the main role. At the same time, I wanted to depict the contrast between something eternally alive and something static and finite. This is how the idea arose to make the characters black and white, like in archival photographs, which embody a state of stillness. I see in this a connection between the past and the present.
By the way, the people in my works are indeed inspired by photographs from the past, including from my family archive. For example, in the work Beauty, my grandmother is depicted, and the canvas is named so because she always says, when we look at the family album, “See how beautiful I was.”
