Painting "Balchug Island"

(Article: AS-202628-49)

400

An island on the Moskva River: "Balchug," "Zamoskvorechye," "Bolotny," "Sadovniki," "Kremlovsky," "Zolotoy," all unofficial names. It is of artificial origin, built in 1783 for the repair of the Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge. The island is connected by as many as 17 bridges, including pedestrian ones; at least that many appear on the current map of Moscow. In the 19th century, a hotel appeared on the island, known today as the "Balchug Kempinski" hotel. Originally, it was a small two-story house built after the fire of 1812, and in 1911 the building was rebuilt into a luxurious hotel that became a symbol of the district.
