The painting by Rene Reza «First date» continues the theme of romantic anticipation, presented in the artist’s expressive and recognizable style. It is a still life in which the objects are divided into two sharp, contrasting registers.
The composition is strictly divided into upper and lower halves. The upper part is a background resembling a chessboard of blue and white squares, formed by a dense, vibrating dotted pattern. Against this background rise three bright scarlet, almost velvety roses. Their color and shape express the classic symbol of love and passion. The leaves and stems are stylized and depicted with white or bluish lines that blend into the background.
The lower part contrasts with the upper: it depicts a table covered with a texture reminiscent of cracked earth or a mosaic of autumn leaves in shades of ochre and burgundy. Here are also a vase and two wine glasses, rendered in a technique reminiscent of faceting or Cubist fragmentation. The glasses appear to be assembled from shards of ice or glass.
Rene Reza masterfully uses this contrast: scarlet passion and the cold geometry of the tableware, the dynamic background and the static, cracked surface of the table. «First date» is a visualization of the complex, multifaceted experience of a first date.
The painting is executed using a unique patented technique called Filumism. The essence of the Filumism technique is that instead of a brush, paint is squeezed through a needle using a syringe and applied to the canvas surface in the form of thin colored threads, creating a kind of nonwoven acrylic tapestry. The artist uses traditional canvas and acrylic threads.
