Mihail Victorov’s painting “Creation of the World” is not an attempt at a literal depiction of the biblical story, but rather a metaphysical reflection on the birth of the Universe, on the divine plan, and on the connection of all things. The artist abandons realistic depiction, resorting to the language of abstraction to convey the greatness and incomprehensibility of the act of creation.
Instead of the usual depiction of God creating the world, in the painting we see two outstretched hands touching fingertips. This gesture, referring to Michelangelo’s famous fresco, symbolizes the transmission of the divine spark, the beginning of life and creation. However, the hands here are depicted in muted, almost golden tones, which gives them an unearthly character.
Below the hands unfolds a chaotic accumulation of shapes and colors. It is difficult to distinguish specific objects, but you can feel the energy and dynamics inherent in the process of creation. It seems that from the primordial chaos, mountains, rivers, clouds, animals - all the elements that make up our world - are born.
