The painting by Oksana Sotnikova “Golden conditions” depicts a fantastic, almost alchemical landscape exploring the contrast between ideal conditions and the reality of survival.
The central element of the composition is a small islet covered with shining golden leaf, symbolizing abundance, the best, «golden» conditions for growth. On this islet, delicate yet prickly green shoots emerge. They symbolize life that, despite seemingly favorable conditions, maintains protective mechanisms.
However, the surrounding environment is not so prosperous. The golden soil is surrounded by gray-blue wavy forms and dotted with numerous eyes staring at the shoots, as well as dark cherry-red drops resembling blood or berries. These eyes create a sense of total surveillance, pressure, or judgment.
Sotnikova questions the very idea of «ideal conditions». Even when everything seems perfect, life remains under close scrutiny, surrounded by vague dangers (red drops) and invisible pressure (many eyes). The painting subtly hints that true development requires not only resources (gold) but also the ability to preserve one’s uniqueness and boundaries in the face of all-pervading gaze.
