When I did this "Inca Gold", an opportunity came up, and I gave it to a group exhibition about Mexico at the Ryabichev Creative Workshop in Moscow in November 2016. Jane Kove-Petrova spoke before me at the opening of the exhibition and said that she had been painting since she was two years old. I thought that I shouldn't be 58 years behind Jane, so I took the microphone and told how, at the age of six or seven, in my native town of Tiraspol in Moldova, I spent a 24-page album in one evening, drawing compositions with colored pencils in approximately the same color key. Fifty-three years later, I repeated one of those bold color compositions on a 80 by 120 cm canvas, but both then and in 2016, I conveyed my imaginary impression of a sunny sidewalk in Mexico City and the depth of the shadow from a house; but how to express the play of powerful light and deep shadow in the title of the painting? No way! So I had to give the picture the pop name INCA GOLD. For those who don't know, in 1963, a 24-page sketchbook was a luxury in my native Tiraspol. My parents didn't punish me for my extravagance, they just looked not understanding what it was all about. At that early age I already felt in my gut that "all painterly jist is in the shadows."
