Each hollyhock flower is a frozen moment of dancing. Sometimes it shines through in the contrast, then it flashes with reflected light, then it seems as if its petals are slightly burned by the sun — they are so warm, almost fiery. They are called stock roses, but these are not the roses that march through city flower beds in orderly rows, like a flower army. Hollyhocks are loners, dreamers, and rebels. They grow near fences, along country roads, in abandoned gardens — wherever there is at least a little space and wind. They cannot be "tamed" with a bouquet. They are not for vases. They are designed to bend under the gusts of wind, rustle the dry stems in autumn and remember how the sun smells in the middle of summer.
