Artist Elena Shipilova: “I don’t paint the object, but the way it breathes”

Artist Elena Shipilova: “I don’t paint the object, but the way it breathes”

For Baranow Art gallery, it is a great stroke of luck when an artist doesn’t just paint beautifully, but also sees the world differently. Painter Elena Shipilova, our permanent resident, is exactly that kind of artist. She neither copies reality nor retreats into pure abstraction. She remains exactly in the middle—where form meets feeling.

Elena calls her style “abstract realism”

This term sounds almost like an oxymoron, yet it holds the key to understanding her work: “I strive neither for an exact copy of nature nor for complete non-objectivity. My artistic language is focused on conveying inner essence. I don’t just look; I see what lies behind the form.”

These words are the best guide to her studio. When looking at Elena’s portraits, you catch yourself thinking that the artist has captured not so much the facial features as the person’s temperament. In her still lifes and compositions, one can discern not just the subject, but its mood: silence, tension, flight, or stillness.

Where this style comes from

Elena was born in Rostov-on-Don. She is a graduate of the Grekov Rostov Art College and the Academy of Architecture and Arts. Her architectural education taught her to think in terms of structure and space, while her classical training taught her to feel line and color. Today, however, she does not follow strict canons but uses them as tools. Her works are held in private collections in Russia and abroad. Yet geography is secondary here; what is primary is how she works with the canvas.

The power of her painting

In an era when neural networks generate images in seconds, the artist’s manual work acquires special value. Elena Shipilova’s works are not about being “pretty” or “realistic.” They are an attempt to convey what cannot be photographed: the inner rhythm of a person or an object. She is not afraid of color, nor of convention or understatement. Her painting leaves the viewer space for their own sensations. You do not just look at a painting—you complete it in your own mind, entering into a dialogue with the feeling that the artist has “caught” and transferred to the canvas.

Who these works are for

At Baranow Art, we value Elena for her honesty. She does not try to please everyone. Her painting is for those who are tired of visual noise. For those who are looking not just for a spot of color on the wall for their home, but for an object that will change the mood of the room and bring the owner back to themselves. Come and get to know her works in our gallery space. An in-person encounter with Elena Shipilova’s painting is always a quiet, yet significant event.
