Artworks of the Week at Baranow Art. Fresh Perspectives in Contemporary Russian Painting

16.06.2026

Every week, the curatorial team at Baranow Art undertakes a rigorous selection process, bringing forward a thoughtfully chosen ensemble of contemporary paintings.
These are not mere inventory updates; they are considered statements — works that embody both originality and intellectual depth, offering a discerning lens onto the evolving landscape of Russian art today.
We are attentive to global movements, yet we resist the pull of fleeting trends. What guides our eye is authenticity, technical mastery, and that ineffable quality — call it a spark — that transforms pigment and canvas into a lived experience, a dialogue between creator and viewer.

The Artists in Focus

This week’s selection introduces six distinctive voices, each contributing a unique chapter to the narrative of modern Russian painting. From established academicians to emerging experimenters, these artists command a range of idioms — from the poetic realism of the Russian North to the metaphysical abstractions that bridge art and cognitive science:

Andrei Kiorescu — A graduate of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts and Industry, Kioresku works in a mode of subjective realism that echoes the emotional intensity of Post‑Impressionism. His landscapes and genre scenes are marked by a luminous palette and a contemplative stillness.

Igor Bragin — A member of the Professional Artists’ Union, Bragin has exhibited extensively across Russia and Europe. His œuvre navigates the territories of Mannerism, Surrealism, and Symbolism, weaving enigmatic narratives that hover between dream and waking life.

Pavel Klimov — A young artist from Irkutsk, Klimov moves fluidly between oil painting and digital media. His recent works have been shown at Art Russia 2022, signaling a fresh, restless energy that challenges conventional boundaries.

Alexander Beridze — Laureate of the Sandro Botticelli Prize and a Merited Artist of Europe, Beridze is the founder of “Mental Figurativism” — a practice that visualizes inner cognitive landscapes. His works have been studied at the Paris Brain Institute, underscoring the profound intersection of art and neuroscience.

Vasily Vlasov — A Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts, Vlasov has been honored with both gold and silver medals from the Academy. With over three hundred exhibitions to his name, he remains a commanding presence in Russian graphic and easel painting, celebrated for his synthesis of calligraphic line and painterly texture.

Elena Komarova — A Merited Artist of Europe and an Academician of the Petrovsky Academy of Sciences and Arts, Komarova has received the Gold Badge for Achievement in Painting. Her work traverses multiple techniques, yet always retains a signature sensitivity to light and atmosphere — a painterly poetry that resonates across borders.
