From the late 19th century to the present day, representatives of European civilization, having fully taken their lives into their own hands, have nevertheless not abandoned the search for its meaning. Today, there exists a mixture of all conceivable paths and knowledge accumulated by humanity throughout its existence. Among the least demanding in terms of strict laws and rules, Europeans have adopted the teachings of Buddhism for themselves.
And here before us, like a flying machine, is the entire Wheel of Samsara. Well, almost entirely, actually quite weathered, with noticeable losses.
The painting serves as a reminder of the somber theme of transition to another existence with probable subsequent reincarnation. However, the artist does not want to burden the viewer with this gloomy mood and therefore, as in previous cases, tries to resort to irony, using it here in the stylistic features of the image: something between Japanese animation, book illustration, and romantic realism. The title itself balances on the edge of tombstone humor, referring us to the once, in the century before last, standard wording of the introduction to a will: «Being of sound mind and memory, I ...».
Moreover, the composition’s content directly hints that each of us always has a free choice: to continue spinning with this ancient Wheel or, as in the case of the «Amulet of Decision Making», to leap into free personal flight. The jay’s feather, an ancient totem bird also known as the Blue Bird, the Bird of Happiness, and, of course, a guide between worlds, as evidenced by its striped coloring, seems to be held here by huge heavy chains. But this is only a metaphorical grotesque. A large anchor chain is not something that can hold the weightless fluff of a feather. Just one light breath of wind—and the feather will carry away into boundless distance. The heavenly background gives the composition a melancholic, twilight mood. The contours of the clouds, illuminated by the sun, do not give a clear understanding of the time of day the Wheel passes before the viewer. Some see a sunset here, others, on the contrary, a sunrise, and others see a bright, calm midday. Peace and silence of the present moment. Time is an illusion that disappears as soon as you pay attention to it. There is nothing new under the sun. And everything is inside us.
