Moscow philanthropist and collector S.I. Shchukin commissioned from Henri Matisse two paintings, "Music" and "Dance."
Before being sent, the paintings were exhibited at the "Autumn Salon" in Paris, where they caused a scandal by shocking viewers with the nudity of the characters.
Shchukin initially refused, but soon changed his mind, asking the artist to paint over the genitals. With this request, he contradicted his earlier words about his decision "to go against our bourgeois views and place a painting with nudes on the staircase of his home."
Therefore, paying tribute to the artist and his vision, the naked girl will still dance to his music.
