Sergey Merenkov’s painting “To the Water” is not just a landscape depicting a man pulling a ship across a desert, but a multi-layered ironic parable about dreams, aspirations, perseverance, and perhaps the absurdity of trying to achieve the impossible. The artist creates a grotesque and memorable image that simultaneously evokes a smile and makes us think about what drives us when we strive for our goal, and what it really means to “achieve” it. The canvas depicts a man laboriously pulling a ship across an endless desert. His face expresses determination, fatigue, and perhaps some obsession with his goal. He seems to ignore the absurdity of the situation and continues to move forward stubbornly, despite all the obstacles.
