Sergey Merenkov’s painting “Tolerant People” is not just a portrait of an elderly couple, but a multi-layered ironic sketch about tolerance, coexistence, the absurdity of human relationships, and what it really means to “accept” another person as they are. The artist creates a grotesque and memorable image that simultaneously evokes a smile and makes one think about complex questions. The canvas depicts an elderly couple standing next to each other. Their faces express simultaneously calmness, humility, and perhaps some detachment. They seem to be used to their lives and accept them as they are, with all their quirks and shortcomings. Of particular interest are the details adorning the characters’ heads. A crow sits on the man’s head, and a bird’s nest with eggs sits on the woman’s head. These elements create an effect of absurdity and grotesqueness, but at the same time they can symbolize how people get along with others’ habits, oddities, and shortcomings, which sometimes seem completely ridiculous.
