Sergey Merenkov’s painting “Throwing Beads” is not just a genre scene with a person feeding pigs, but a multi-layered ironic parable about the futility of effort, about ingratitude, about the inability to perceive the beautiful, and about what it really means to “cast beads before swine.” The artist creates a grotesque and memorable image that simultaneously evokes a smile and makes one think about complex questions.
The canvas depicts a person scattering something from a bowl in front of a huge herd of pigs. His face expresses simultaneously concentration, humility, and perhaps some fatigue. He seems to be used to his role and performs it with unruffled calm, despite the lack of any gratitude on the part of the pigs. The pigs themselves, greedily devouring the food, are the key symbol of the painting. They symbolize ingratitude, ignorance, and the inability to perceive anything of value. The pigs, absorbed only by their own needs, do not notice either the beauty or the value of what is offered to them.
