Sergey Merenkov’s painting “Collective Unconscious” is not simply a genre scene, but a multi-layered ironic parable about hidden motives, collective behavior, the absurdity of human nature, and what is really hidden behind our actions. The artist creates a grotesque and memorable image that simultaneously evokes a smile and makes one think about complex psychological and social questions.
The canvas depicts a group of people walking in an unknown direction. Each of them is busy with his own business: one is carrying a shovel, another is blowing a trumpet, and a third is riding a pig. Their faces express simultaneously concentration, purposefulness, and perhaps some detachment. They seem to be driven by some invisible force, a collective impulse, without thinking about the meaning of their actions.
