Картина написана с натуры во время пленэра в селе Нижняя Синячиха на Урале. Изображена деревянная мельница на контрасте с закатным небом. Уже рисовал эту мельницу, но здесь она вышла особенно выразительно, работа получилась с настроением. Особого драмматизма в создание картины добавляло не только уходящее солнце, но и комары, съедавшие меня тем сырым вечером. Я не мог ошибаться и медлить. Все мои действия были точными. Картина получилась живой и сочной.
