Tarkovsky was searching for locations to shoot his film «Nostalgia», and Tonino told him about the «Villa Syracuse» in southern Italy, once owned by the Russian princess Elena from the Gorchakov family. The villa has
a remarkable terrace, on the marble floor of which flying almond leaves are depicted. They are so skillfully crafted that they seem alive, as if just blown by the wind or by the invisible hand of an angel. This story inspired the painting. The main theme was taken from nature during a journey through the hilly Val d’Orcia valley, whose name translates as «golden hills». The flying petals symbolize the connection between the present and the past.
