…and people will be as we see them today.
Édouard Manet on the concept of the painting The Luncheon on the Grass.
157 years ago, Édouard Manet's painting was called a slap in the face of good taste for the artist's blatant disregard of the academic traditions of his era and was not admitted to the annual Paris Salon exhibition due to the audacity of interpreting an academic subject too straightforwardly transplanted by the artist into his contemporary time.
One and a half centuries later, looking at Vadim Stolyarov's composition The New Luncheon on the Grass, no one in the 21st century will be disturbed by the image of a domineering autocrat sitting arrogantly in nature surrounded by beautiful representatives of office plankton. This naked king, reveling in his own power, fits perfectly within the traditions of the new body positivity aesthetics so actively promoted today by the advocates of a tolerant society. The departing nature – the athlete. He sadly bowed his head and clenched his fist in realization of his own moral impotence, feeling the lack of demand for his achievements left unnoticed. But all the characters in the painting are surrounded by a supremely bright suprematist forest, creating the impression of a grand conceptual game. At any moment, the heroes can switch places or completely dissolve, transforming, like the forest in the painting, into new geometric shapes, only to then settle comfortably for the breakfast of the next century of humanity.
