Common to the diptych is an expressive painting style, the use of bright, contrasting colors, and the desire to create a deep symbolic subtext. Yuri Marushkin uses the carnival as a metaphor to explore themes of hypocrisy, hidden desires, fears, and perhaps self-discovery. The carnival, where one can assume another role, where masks are removed but people hide behind new masks, becomes the perfect backdrop for such reflections.
