The first night of Nikolai Gogol's play «The Government Inspector» was met with a mixture of flattery and harsh criticism from the audience. From Gogol’s letter to Russia: «...Novelty is not characteristic of Rome; here everything is more ancient: the city, the pope, the churches, the paintings. It seems to me that novelty was invented by those who miss you, but... in Rome no one can be bored except those whose souls are cold, like the inhabitants of Petersburg, especially the officials, countless as the sea sand...»
