The first night of Nikolai Gogol's play «The
Inspector General» was met with confusion of
flattery and brickbeds from the audience. The
author himself was painfully disgusted by a
caricatured grotesque acting in his play like in
a trite French vaudeville. «...I expected, I knew
in advance how things would go, and with all
this, a sad and annoying painful feeling clothed
me. My creation seemed disgusting and wild as
if it was not mine at all». Gogol fled to Europe,
through Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France,
but held on to the eternal city of Rome as an
«anchor». For 10 years, the refugee lived on fees
from productions of the corrected «The Inspector
General», which captivated Nicholas I that he
ordered to include the play in the repertoire of all
imperial theaters, as well as on donations from
the Tsar through his relatives who visited Rome.
From Gogol's letter to Russia: «...Newness is
not characteristic of Rome, everything here is
more ancient: City, Pope, churches, paintings. It
seems to me that novelty was invented by those
who miss you, but... no one can get bored in
Rome, except those whose souls are cold, like the
dwellers of St. Petersburg, especially its officials,
countless like the sea sand...» From a letter to the
poet Zhukovsky: «...As if, for the purpose of the
almighty hand of providence, I was thrown under
the sparkling sky of Italy so that I would forget
about grief, about people, about everything, and I
stuck in its luxurious beauty. It replaced everything
for me. I'm cheerful. My soul is bright. I work and
hasten to do my work with all my might». And this
was the main novel of the classic — «Dead Souls».
