Starosadsky Lane, once known as Kvasnoy, Kiselny, Kosmodamiansky. The uneven and varied-age buildings at the street’s bend caught my eye.
For a brief period, Mandelstam lived in Starosadsky Lane; he did not like the capital. And he is not alone in this—very much in tune with today’s “dislikers.” Well, let them be judged by God.
Four excerpts from his series “Moscow Poems.”

Everything in the capital is alien and improper to us:
Its dry, callous earth,
And the wild trade at Sukharevka’s bread market,
And the terrifying sight of the robber Kremlin.

The sleds plunged into black ruts,
And the crowd returned from the revelry.
Thin men and angry women
Shifted their feet by the gates.

From fresh drops, the vineyard
Stirred in the grass:
As if a cold nursery
Opened in patchy Moscow!

When in the warm night the
Feverish Forum of Moscow falls silent
And the wide yawns of theaters
Return the crowd to the squares—
Along the streets flows the lavish
Revival of nocturnal funerals;
Darkly joyful crowds pour out
From some divine depths.
This night sun buries
The rabble excited by games,
