The painting by Oksana Sotnikova, “Созависимость”, is a powerful allegory of complex interpersonal relationships, captured in a surreal landscape.
At the center of the composition are two naked leafless trees, whose branches reach towards each other, forming an arch-like shape. However, their roots do not go into the ground but are attached to heavy cubic blocks. These blocks, resembling leaden shackles, symbolize unhealthy, rigid structures that restrict freedom.
The trees, despite their outward connection, appear exhausted, hinting that dependency drains the life force from both sides. Above them stretches a background dominated by gold, symbolizing the idealized or valuable nature of these relationships, yet at the same time seeming cold and detached.
At the bottom center, there is an oval golden space resembling a mirror or whirlpool, flanked by two blue elements resembling eyes attached to the edges. This may indicate that the entire structure is held together by mutual control or projection.
In Sotnikova’s «Созависимость», the paradox is masterfully conveyed: objects that should grow and develop independently are forced to cling to their shackles to avoid falling into the void. The gold here is not a reward but a barrier that keeps them in a state of forced yet destructive unity.
