In this painting, red is really red, yet black is not exactly black.
The interaction between them is complex, they are fighting each other, each of them seeks to advance further and defeat the other, to capture the other in a pincer movement, to oust. As a result, there is a powerful movement in the painting: flashes play; shades of red and black appear; everything pulsates. This is a pictorial rendering of the struggle for survival, as is usual in nature; essentially it is a painterly depiction of war for living space.
