Hollyhocks are a special art. It does not tolerate studio confinement, requiring work exclusively in the open air. Why? Because: its stems live in symbiosis with the surrounding space — a sagging fence, a dusty road, the scent of the earth warmed by the sun, its inflorescences dance under the breeze, changing shape every minute, its color scheme transforms depending on the time of day — from delicate pink morning shades to deep evening tones. In the history of art, the hollyhocks occupies a special place: for Levitan it became part of the lyrical landscape, for Kustodiev it turned into a bright accent of folk life, for the Impressionists it played the role of a natural tuning fork, according to which lighting effects were adjusted. It is noteworthy that hollyhock is never lonely. It is always surrounded by rustic daisies, thickets of nettles, and cats basking in the sun. These companions create the very authentic environment, without which the image loses its authenticity.
