The world of Hellenism is presented as an eternal celebration, as a "golden age" once lost by humanity, a carefree time of bliss and pleasure.
This theme allowed the artist to recreate the graceful plasticity of the beautiful female body, evoking sensuality without a hint of vulgarity. The magnificent Mediterranean landscape (the Bay of Naples) forms a worthy frame for the beautiful heroine.
The painting was created in Rome in 1881 by commission from Kozma Soldatenkov — a well-known entrepreneur — and is now housed in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
A reduced version of this painting (77 x 155 cm) was sold at Sotheby's auction in New York in 2011 for 2 million 98 thousand dollars.
