The painting by Oleg Maiorov “Mahadev” (one of the names of Shiva, the Great God) is a solemn and majestic depiction of one of the central deities of the Hindu pantheon. The artist presents Shiva not only as an ascetic but also as a powerful Lord, surrounded by symbols of his divine power and influence over the cosmos.
At the center of the composition dominates the figure of Mahadev, whose face is filled with calm, focused strength. His image is rendered with realistic precision. On his forehead are three horizontal stripes (tilak), signifying his connection to the three worlds and his nature as the destroyer of illusions. His hair is gathered into a high knot, from which, as it should be, a crescent moon descends — a symbol of time. In his left hand, the deity holds a trident (trishula), a weapon symbolizing the triad of creation, preservation, and destruction.
The background of the painting anchors the deity in his mystical surroundings. In the background, a majestic, snow-covered peak is visible — likely the sacred Mount Kailash, the abode of Shiva. The sky above the mountain is clear and blue, emphasizing the transcendent nature of the deity.
Special significance is given by the presence next to Mahadev of an elephant, whose figure likely refers to Ganesha (although in the painting he is shown in a reduced scale and somewhat differently than classic depictions), or simply serves as a symbol of wisdom. On the ground below, a small flame alludes to his role as a destroyer, capable of incinerating the universe.
Maiorov managed to convey the multifaceted nature of Mahadev: he is simultaneously a stern ascetic, detached from the world, and an almighty cosmic destroyer standing guard over the world order.
