The painting "Steps of History" features a drawing depicted on a kylix (Kylix: three figures, silver, gold, 440-430 BC) as a shadow on the cliff of the past. Archaeological finds of pottery and other artifacts from the settlement are steps into the future.
This is what a cross-section of the settlement looks like. All these layers from the 6th century BC to the present day were formed one after another from construction and household debris, burying the remains of buildings beneath them.
Clay structures deteriorated quickly, and new ones were built in their place. Therefore, over 26 centuries, the cultural layer here has reached 12 meters.
The Hermonassa settlement is located in the center of modern Taman. The earliest excavated structures here date back to the middle of the 6th century BC. This land holds traces of Greek colonization, Roman rule, the Great Migration of Peoples, the history of the Khazar Khaganate, the campaigns of the princes of Kievan Rus, the Genoese colony, Ottoman domination, the events of Taman’s annexation to Russia, and the Crimean, Civil, and Great Patriotic Wars.
The city has changed its name many times. The ancient Greeks called it Hermonassa, the Khazars - Matluka or Tamatarkha, the Slavs - Tmutarakan, the Polovtsy - Matrika or Matarkha, the Genoese - Matrega, the Turks - Taman.
