The painting by Vladimir Abaimov, «The Trial of Paris. Modern technology», reinterprets the classic mythological theme through the lens of surreal geometry and corporeality.
The central element is a technique reminiscent of peeling wallpaper or a sheet of paper. A white, geometrically precise surface is folded back, revealing what lies beneath. Under this “surface” emerges a human body painted in disturbing red-brown tones, resembling dripping paint or melting flesh. The contours of a female figure are visible, alluding to Paris’s choice between the goddesses.
Besides the corporeal, surreal layer, the composition includes apples—a classic element of the myth of Paris. One apple is placed on the white background, another in the lower, open part of the painting, against a greenish space. These apples serve as markers of choice and temptation.
The overall color scheme represents a clash of cool (bright blue background on the right, green at the bottom) and warm, “fleshly” shades. Geometric lines and sharp angles dividing the space create a sense of artificiality and tense decision-making.
Abaimov’s work transforms the myth of the judgment of beauty into a contemporary reflection on the falseness of appearances, on how reality (flesh, emotions) is hidden behind the glossy facade of “modern technologies” or commonly accepted notions. It is a visual paradox where flesh and temptation are exposed through a geometric rupture.
