This original work, «The Cap following his Shadow», was created by contemporary Russian artist Vladimir Abaimov.
Vladimir Abaimov's painting «The Cap following his Shadow» is a deeply surreal piece that challenges logic and captivates the viewer with its mystery and technical precision. The work is immersed in a deep, velvety darkness, immediately setting it apart from typical realistic landscapes.
The central object of the composition resembles an inverted, elongated, shapeless headwear or perhaps a part of a fantastical sea creature. This object, painted in pale beige, flesh tones, sharply contrasts with the completely black background. It appears to be floating in the void, with its extended "tail" reaching upward and to the right, giving the composition a strange yet confident dynamic.
The lower part of the painting features a horizontal surface bathed in warm, yellowish-golden light. This surface serves as the stage for the central dramatic action. From the lower edge of the "cap" descend thin, taut threads that connect to a dark, oval void on the light ground. This void is evidently the very "shadow" that the object is following.
The painting’s narrative is metaphorical and enigmatic. It may symbolize self-discovery, the pursuit of one's inner impulses, or the absurdity of existence, where the object is forced to follow its immaterial reflection. Abaimov creates a sense of tension: the fragile threads linking the form to the void speak of the fine line between matter and non-being.
The technical execution is distinguished by smoothness and precision of rendering, characteristic of classical surrealism. «The Cap following his Shadow» is a visual riddle that prompts the viewer to reflect on the nature of reality, selfhood, and the invisible connections that govern our actions.
