Dmitry Syrov at Baranow Art Gallery: Abstraction as the Quintessence of Feeling

26.05.2026

Today we want to tell you about one of the key resident artists of the Baranow Art Gallery — Dmitry Syrov. His works are already well known to our regular collectors, and for those just discovering his painting, this letter is an invitation to a dialogue — exactly the kind of dialogue the artist himself offers.

From Impressionism to Elusive Meaning

Dmitry Syrov was born on January 25, 1970, in Dzerzhinsk, into a military family. Since 1996, he has devoted himself entirely to painting and has become a member of the International Art Fund and the Professional Union of Artists of the Moscow branch. Today he works in two cities — Rostov-on-Don and New York — continuing to develop his unique artistic language.

The artist’s path began with Impressionism, but over time realistic forms gave way to philosophical abstraction. Since 2017, Syrov has fully immersed himself in this approach. Why? Here is his own explanation:

Abstraction is the quintessence of a phenomenon. How can you express the aftertaste of a fine wine? What color is Love? What lines and shades can convey the concept of ‘strength’? This is possible only through abstraction, which reveals the very essence of the idea.”

Ancient Techniques — Contemporary Resonance

A special place in Dmitry’s work belongs to encaustic and cold wax — methods that originated in Ancient Greece and Egypt. Wax and natural resins create a unique depth on the canvas, translucent layers, and a light haze, making colors play with new shades. These techniques are rarely found in Russia, so the artist independently studied foreign practices, ordered materials from abroad, and even developed his own equivalents.

I did not choose cold wax and encaustic by chance. They allow me to express my ideas most deeply and precisely,” says Syrov.

Between the Lines: A Dialogue with the Viewer

The artist’s core concept is “between the lines.” His paintings are not finished in the classical sense; they do not describe a real image and are not monologues. On the contrary, they encourage dialogue, set a mood, and structure a space for reflection. The works are often accompanied by short texts, parables, or metaphorical questions that deepen perception.

Enchantment is more important than beauty, and the aftertaste carries more than the taste itself.

Recognition in Russia and Around the World

Dmitry Syrov’s works are held in private collections in Russia, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Germany, as well as in galleries in New York and Lennox (USA).

Through his collaboration with the Baranow Art Gallery, the artist’s works were presented at the international Affordable Art Fair in Singapore — and with great success: several paintings were acquired by visitors. This once again confirms that the language of abstraction spoken by Syrov is understood and appreciated by audiences worldwide, without translation.

How to Acquire His Works

You can explore Dmitry Syrov’s current works and purchase them right now on the Baranow Art Gallery website. Each painting is not just an interior piece, but a daily practice of attentive, deep contemplation. And an invitation to a conversation in which there are no right or wrong answers.

Sincerely,
