Alexandra Büssing

Country: Germany

Born and raised in Moscow. In 2005, she graduated from the Surikov Institute. During her studies, she completed a summer internship in Germany in the class of Karin Kniffel, a student of Gerhard Richter, which significantly influenced her understanding of the goals and meanings of art, as did the subsequent years of living in Europe. Since 2012, she has been successfully working in the field of monumental art, receiving acknowledgments and medals from the Russian Academy of Arts. She has participated in exhibitions in Russia, Germany, and Switzerland. Her works are held in private collections in Russia, Germany, France, and Switzerland; a significant part of the collection belongs to Anton Belov, Lea Verny, and Vladimir Potapov.

My artistic practice combines monumental and easel contemporary art. The combination of canonical, partially abstract church tradition and modern figurative practice is perceived by me not as a conflict of styles, but as an opportunity to explore time as an artistic factor and the interaction between the author and the viewer.

I am interested in the coexistence of the enduring and the ephemeral, the living and the dead, the symbolic and the material. German colleagues once defined my direction as “neo-romanticism,” and overall this reflects the essence of my work. In a dynamic and accelerating world, every moment can become eternal if its beauty is captured. I see my task as helping the viewer feel the fragility and value of the moment.
