"Woods" is a painting born from immersion. It belongs to a cycle of works created during a summer spent traveling through Udmurtia, living in a tent and painting on unstretched canvases that moved with the wind. This practice was a form of symbiosis — a deep, physical merging with the rhythms and states of nature.
This particular piece captures the visceral duality of a night drive through the forest. It is an experience both terrifying and deeply cozy, where the enveloping darkness feels simultaneously like a threat and an embrace. From the car speakers, heavy rock music thunders, a defiant soundtrack to the silence of the trees. The glow of a cigarette in hand punctuates the gloom — a small, personal beacon.
In the back seat, a dog rests, a silent and loyal companion. This painting is a confession of a specific kind of solitude: the state of being alone, yet profoundly and wonderfully not lonely. It is a tribute to the raw, electric drive of the night, and the perfect, self-contained universe of a car speeding through a sleeping world.
