Practitioners of this movement were found in North and South America, Africa, Australia and Oceania. The ideology was focused on the belief in supernatural phenomena, such as the world of gods, ancestral spirits and demons. In Chinese culture, both men and women were shamans - everyone understood the rituals responsible for interacting with spirits. In Korea and Japan, shamans were mainly women. In Russia, Siberia is considered the birthplace of this ancient movement.
"Shaman" is a borrowing from Russian, where it came from the Evenk languages. The root "sa" can mean "knowledge", and the suffix "man" indicates a tendency towards something. Thus, "shaman" means "knowing what others do not know".
