Since 1987, she worked in the creative houses of the Union of Artists of the USSR "Gorychy Kluch," "Pereslavl-Zalessky". Works are in the museum "House of N.V. Gogol" (Moscow), private collections in Germany, Yugoslavia, Spain, USA, Latvia, Spain, Russia.

Kalmykova's toponymy is a guide to secluded places, precisely with "Moscow" charm, the Moscow environment. On her canvases you can see the facades of houses that have noticeably absorbed the sun with terracotta plaster, an evening cozy courtyard illuminated by the light of fairy-electric lanterns, a symmetrical roar of lion mascarons on a lonely passer-by, a twist of a very "curved" lane, an embankment that goes both into the sky and into the infinity of the road. And further, further - infinitely familiar, native lanes, and streets, and courtyards, and boulevards, and parks, squares, embankments, squares...
In Kalmykova's painting, Moscow is very recognizable. First of all, we recognize the air itself, character, color, atmosphere. Her paintings come to life under a close look and draw her into her space, into her environment. It seems that the point here is personal emotion, good harmony of the narrative. Yulia Kalmykova writes a lot and loves to write flowers. Her still lifes are perceived as "portraits of flowers," accurately revealing the aesthetics, character of the flower - in certain circumstances of the interior, lighting, mood of the author. Moscow is the main theme of the exhibition "City and Flowers" in the "Gogol House." And numerous still lifes with flowers, so pleasing to the visitor's gaze in the exhibition exposition, do not dispute this thematic championship at all. Родилась в Москве. Занималась живописью в студии Краснопресненского дома пионеров под руководством Я.Каплан. В 1986 году вступила в Молодежное объединение МОСХ. С 1992 года член Московского союза художников. С 1987 года работала в творческих домах Союза художников СССР «Горячий ключ», «Переславль-Залесский". Работы находятся в музее "Дом Н.В.Гоголя" (Москва), частных коллекциях в Германии, Югославии, Испании, США, Латвии, Испании, России.

На её полотнах можно увидеть фасады домов, ощутимо впитавших солнце терракотой штукатурки, вечерний уютный двор, освещённый светом сказочно-электрических фонарей, симметричный рык львиных маскаронов на одинокого прохожего, скрутку очень «кривоколенного» переулка, набережную, уходящую и в небо, и в бесконечность дороги. И далее, далее, — бесконечно знакомые, родные переулки, и улицы, и дворы, и бульвары, и парки, площади, набережные, скверы...
В живописи Калмыковой Москва очень узнаваема. Прежде всего, узнаваем сам воздух, характер, колорит, атмосфера. Картины её оживают под внимательным взглядом и втягивают в своё пространство, в свою среду. Думается, дело тут в личной эмоции, доброй гармонии повествования. Юлия Калмыкова очень много пишет и любит писать цветы. Её натюрморты воспринимаются как «портреты цветов», точно раскрывающие эстетику, характер цветка, — в определённых обстоятельствах интерьера, освещения, настроения автора. Москва — главная тема выставки «Город и цветы» в «Доме Гоголя». А многочисленные натюрморты с цветами, столь радующие взор посетителя в экспозиции выставки, это тематическое первенство вовсе не оспаривают.
